Helpful resources and ideas for action on the issue of poverty

"Raise the Rates"

The attached information can be useful to rural and urban congregations in all of Manitoba.  Data for Ontario will be different but the material may be useful to our congregations in Ontario as well.  On September 21st, the Social Planning Council of  Winnipeg launched an action called "Raise the Rates'” in an effort to reduce poverty in Manitoba by calling on the Government to raise welfare rates.

The campaign was launched with a press release at Central Park in Winnipeg.  While most of those who are Employment & Income Assistance (EIA) recipients in Manitoba are in Winnipeg, there are many recipients in other centres and rural parts of the province.  Rev. Bob Gilbert, United Church minister and staff person at West Broadway Community Ministry is a member of the Social Planning Council’s Poverty Advisory Committee and has made this material available for use throughout all of Manitoba.

Deadline for the petition is November 15, 2007.  The various documents on the website can be helpful resources for any work a congregation may be doing on the issue of poverty.
