Annual Meeting

Every year the conferences across the United Church of Canada meet to discuss faith and policy within their conference and across our church.

The Annual Meeting of the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario takes place in the spring, usually late May or early June.

The 2010 Annual Meeting of the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario
will be held May 27th-30th in Killarney, Manitoba

    Come to Killarney!

We, in Killarney and area, are getting very excited about hosting the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario in late May. The Annual Meeting Planning Committee has been hard at work making sure that souls will be nourished, stomachs fed, and minds expanded. Does that sound like an exaggeration? By no means! The theme of this year’s Conference will be interesting and challenging, and Killarney will be a wonderful host.

Having lived and ministered in Killarney for the past 10 years, I can tell you that the area is beautiful (built around Killarney Lake), the people are great (and are looking forward to hosting many of you as billets), and the food is delicious (I have to exercise continually to maintain my remarkable physique).

If you are worried about accommodations, please consider thinking outside the box this year. Many of us have become accustomed to the relative ease of booking hotel rooms in Winnipeg (or elsewhere) for Conference weekend. Although hotel space is limited in the Killarney area, we have a number of other options that could be a wonderful change of pace for you.

    1) Billets – people here are excited about the possibility of hosting one or two delegates. This can be either a great way to get to know some wonderful people in Killarney and area (if you are an extrovert and enjoy visiting), or just a comfortable place to lay your head after a long day at Conference (if you are an introvert, or, like Bruce Faurschou, just don’t like meeting new people). Our people will be open to (warned about) both personality types that may be requiring billets. I’m only half joking. Seriously, though, think about stepping outside of your usual comfort zone. Billeting can be a great experience, one that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the three or four times I’ve done it. So consider it, and please don’t let it keep you from attending Conference this year.

    2) Camping – not everyone has access to a camper, but if you do, Killarney has some gorgeous campgrounds, right within the town limits, on the shores of Killarney Lake. Conference would seem like a holiday if you decide to book a site. Come and enjoy mornings and evenings filled with the sights and sounds of God’s Creation.

    3) If you are really tied to the hotel idea, Brandon is just an hour away. It seems far on a map, but if you compare the hour-long drive through beautiful scenic southwestern Manitoba (with very few other vehicles in sight) to the bumper-to-bumper rush hour drive through Winnipeg (that takes almost as long), you might consider it a possibility. What better way to clear your head after a long day at Conference than a nice drive in the country?

Wow! All of this vociferous hospitality has me considering a career-change – Real Estate Agent, Manitoba Tourism Official, or perhaps a used car salesman! Anyway, I’m quite serious about the beauty of the area, not to mention our two wonderful new modern facilities (Shamrock Centre and Killarney United Church, both of which are less than three years old and ideal sites for a Conference like ours). So don’t miss out! Book your room, fill in your forms, and plan on a fantastic four-day getaway to beautiful Killarney! We’ll see you here!
